Tenterfield is a very historic town, with a population of around 7000 in the township, and the surrounding community. It is known as the birthplace of our nation. In fact it was Sir Henry Parkes who revisited his old constituency, making that famous speech proposing to have a union of six colonies into a federation of states. Tenterfield is home to the famous singer "Peter Allen". His Grandfather - George Woolnough owned and ran the "Tenterfield Saddler", also one of Peter Allen's famous song's. As can be seen in the stories of Peter Allen's songs, Tenterfield held a special place in Peter Allen's heart. There were many distinguished individuals connected with Tenterfield. One was Banjo Patterson who made his vows to Alice Walker, at the Local Presbyterian Church, both being local residents. Alice Walker was a resident of the "Tenterfield Station". Another was Major J F Thomas, the Local Solicitor. He defended "Breaker Morant" during 1902 South African War. There are many historic Museums displaying Photos, Artifacts, Paintings, Tools and Machinery. Around the township, there are many historic Buildings that have been restored to their former glory. Right next door to "Tenterfield Motor Inn", is the magnificent "Stannum House". Originally built in 1880 for a wealthy Tin Mining giant in Robert Holmes Reid. Robert Holmes Reid contributed hugely to the town's water, Electricity Supplies, Hospital, Meatworks and Butter Factory. Tenterfield is rich in mining resources - Gold, Silver, Tin and Iron Ore to name a few. The Locals of Tenterfield are very friendly and welcoming to new visitors. They are only too happy to help and provide interesting information wherever necessary.
