Visited Woolworths Cowes store this past Thursday with someone I support. My participant had 4 vouchers to use to pay for her groceries. Previously my participant had attempted to get someone to write the balance of each card on the card itself, to which the response was 'the balance is on the receipt'. On this day the person serving us saw the vouchers and immediately their attitude changed. Their discriminatory position wasn't even disguised and it was all they could do not to spit venom when we asked if the balance of each voucher could be checked and the balance written on the cards. I was treated with respect as I do not have a visible physical or mental health issue, but the participant (who is highly intelligent) was treated like an outcast. The checkout wasn't busy, my participant only had a few things to buy, and it took the worker only a minute to check the balance of the cards. Woolworths Cowes, your workers need to be made aware that it's illegal to discriminate with actions or attitude against people who have a disability, and that it takes only one unkind word or attitude to push vulnerable people over the edge. Thanks a lot for the discriminatory behaviour that caused my participant to cry. It took me hours to calm the situation. Sharon B.
