Installing CAT J Series Bucket Teeth

CAT J Series bucket teeth are a pivotal component of your loader or excavator and proper installation will ensure the maximum digging performance of your earth-moving machinery.

The CAT J Series is renowned for its great retention and performance over time and different bucket teeth in the series are needed for a range of external environmental conditions. Selecting the correct bucket teeth from the CAT J Series for your situation is crucial, but it is only the start. You must make sure your bucket teeth are installed correctly.

Why is the proper installation of bucket teeth so important?

In order to reap the advantages of using bucket teeth from the CAT J Series, it’s important to install them correctly. By installing your bucket teeth properly, you can ensure you avoid any mistakes in the future that can often be costly. On top of minimising these maintenance costs, you’re also increasing the performance of your machinery.

Safety first!

It’s important that you prepare a safe workplace before you begin your installation in order to minimise the risk of any injuries occurring. Ensure you’re wearing your correct personal protective equipment, especially safety glasses and safety boots.

For your own safety when installing the bucket teeth, tag the machine out by applying the parking breaks on the loader or excavator and make sure it’s turned off. Remove the ignition key and keep it away from the machinery. This is simply to ensure that nobody starts the machine while you’re working on it.

Preparing for installation

In preparation for installation, position the bucket with its teeth parallel to the ground. You can even use wooden blocking or jack stands to effectively support the bucket. This will also help with the prevention of any potential pinching or crushing accidents.

Once you believe you are ready to safely begin, follow the seven steps below to install your CAT J Series bucket teeth.

Step One

Remove the existing teeth by using a Fortus pin removal tool. Hammer the pin removal tool in to the pin from the side of the tooth with the retainer. (Hammering from the other side will take more time and effort to get the pin through the retainer)

Step Two

Remove the tooth and clean any excess dirt from the adaptor using a wire bristle brush, or any similar tool.

Step Three

Insert the retainer into the retainer recess in the adaptor.

Step Four

Position the tooth on the adaptor, ensuring that the retainer stays in place.

Step Five

Insert the pin through the tooth and adaptor from the opposite side of the retainer. This will make it far easier for the installation.

Be sure to insert the end of the pin with the recess first.

Step Six

Hammer the pin until the pin is flush with the end of the tooth.

Step Seven

Finally, the recess in the pin will lock into the retainer.

By following these simple steps, you will successfully install your CAT J Series bucket teethand will be getting the best possible performance out of your loader or excavator.
