Description
“Making space for Every Body, Every day to Move, Create and Connect”
"Through the power of dance as a cultural, personal-development, and holistic well-being practice, we strive for unity in our diversity within an ever evolving world, and promote positive self-expression, while always acknowledging the roots with respect to those who came before us.
We deliver a weekly program of online and face to face dance classes in and around Melbourne, dance foundation courses, private lessons, workshops, performances, mentoring, and community outreach programs for people of all ages, and backgrounds. Our dancers are available individually or as a group for performances, education and entertainment bookings for private functions, school incursions, community programs, small and large scale events, festival or digital projects.
Jungle City’s mission is to makes space for Every Body Every Day to participate in our innate human need to Move, Create and Connect with people and place through the power of dance as a cultural, educational, celebratory and personal development practice.
Through both our in house curated programs and external collaborative projects we endevour to create positive and meaningful connections between diverse communities, promoting the importance of historical and cultural knowledge and respect, and providing professional development and employment opportunities for those who are disadvantaged due to social and cultural inequality.
We are a leader in community focused dance practice, offering an alternative to the mainstream within an Australian context, centering our practice around cultural and social dance forms that stem from African roots. We believe these dance forms offer the tools that can go beyond just artistic expression and performance to also support our mental health and well-being, improve our social connections, initiate personal, collective and spiritual growth, and has the power to create real, positive social change.
The dance forms our dancers primarily practice include Jamaican Dancehall, Afro Dances and Hip Hop, and we do so with a duty to not just teach ‘moves’ but to share the history, social and cultural context of the dance we teach. We acknowledge and inform our students and audience about the individual dance creators and their communities for the creative contributions they have made to dance as an art form. We see our ability to learn these dances as a privilege and one that must always be done respectfully, giving back financially through fundraisers and other initiatives as an ongoing element of our organisations activities.
