This alternative route between Perth and Kalgoorlie is 35kms longer, yet 20 minutes shorter than the Great Eastern Highway. It avoids most of the traffic problems, and includes some wonderful scenery through some of the country’s prime wheat and wool producing areas. Bruce Rock was originally known as Nunagin, but confusion with other towns in the area led to the change to its present name. The town's name originates from a low granite outcrop, which lies to the east of the town. This was named after a sandalwood cutter named John Rufus Bruce, who set up his camp near a soak at the base of the rock.
