The Australian Chinese Daily was founded on 19 March 1987 by the entrepreneurial Chinese immigrant Ms Sandra Lau. Her vision then, which remains at the core of the publication today, was to bridge the gap and strengthen links between Australia and China. The paper has undergone several revolutions in its history. The first edition was read vertically and the paper opened on the left, in traditional Chinese style. It wasn’t until 1990 that, in a pioneer move, the paper became the first Chinese publication in Australia to be formatted in the western style, changing its orientation so that it opened from the right. Soon after, in 1997, colour was introduced in time to report on the Hong Kong handover. Our independent editorial team covers the latest news from amalgamated Australian sources, as well as China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. This is interpreted to answer the needs of the burgeoning local community with a pertinent mix of politics, sports, entertainment, business and features, together with the two lifestyle magazines, rich with content that highlights culture, commerce, food, fashion, festivals and entertainment.
