Pastoral Hotel was erected during the boom years in Port Augusta, where between 1878 and 1883, twelve hotels were built. Building commenced in 1881 and The Pastoral was first opened in February 1882. Conveniently located close to the Railway Workshop, the land and neighbouring suburbs surrounding The Pastoral, were owned by Thomas Hardy, a vigneron who went on to establish Hardy Wines. Hardy transferred his interest in The Pastoral in December 1886 to Eliza J Anstis for her lifetime only. Upon her death in 1911, Hardy regained his interest in the property and retained it until his death in 1912, upon which it transferred to May Adelaide Anstis.
