The name Gilkisons has been synonymous with the dancing scene since 1931. Many innovations were pioneered by Gilkisons such as teaching at high school and primary school level television teaching and presentations, learning to dance socially with out having to do exams or medals, producing the Festival of Perth championships and other international dancing events at the Entertainment Centre. This has lifted social dance out of the old fashion stigma that was dancing for years by using modern music, lighting and sound not to mention the fully licensed and air conditioned premises. The latter sounds strange but many teachers and premises are still back in those dark ages. Gilkisons are now into the third generation of the family tradition. Included are dance teachers, disc jockeys, lighting and sound architects, world champion dancers and choreographers just to mention a few. In fact, Gilkisons is the only venue in the city at which this style of dancing, that is, latin and ballroom social dancing is taught. The premises are also available for private function hire. The founder, Mr Sam Gilkison MBE way back in the 30s said of dancing ‘that certain magic feeling can only be when two people dance to a rhythm as one.’ This can only be a short resume of the many years Gilkisons have been operating and teaching Perth to dance as space does not allow. If you wish to learn and enjoy dancing look no further, 2 million clients since 1931 says it all. The staff employed are some of the most talented and highly qualified dance teachers in Australia. With the purchase of the city ballroom and associated premises in 1998 dancing is set to a part of Perth for many years to come.
