The Newborough Yallourn Men Shed Inc is located at the rear of the Heritage Listed Yallourn Production Centre. The future of the building is to repurpose the Heritage Listed Yallourn Production Centre as Yallourn Social Enterprise Community and Creative Hub, vibrant community space-hosting social enterprises, arts groups, boosting economic development, social inclusion, and cultural activities, through community connection, service delivery, participation and activation. This project contributes to reimagining a different future for this historic regional area, Yallourn, which under Sir John Monash’s vision, became the centre for the brown coal power station in Australia, and is now transitioning, 100 years later, to continue to generate opportunities for the community. The property is owned by Environmental Clean Technology Ltb (ECT). And is heritage listed with Heritage Victoria. The original building was started in October 1923 as the main administration office for the State Electricity Commission (SEC) and has had a colourful history over the last 100 years. It is the only remaining structure from the Brown Coal Industry, set up by Sir John Monash. Over the years it has been the main administration building, survey and planning/ drafting for the SEC. In the last 20 years it had a very chequered history being a night club and a brothel. Over the last 5 years it has suffered, and a lot of vandalism has occurred as well as white ant impact. The Men’s Shed has moved in to revitalize it and to improve its existence and long term future as a significant building in Gippsland and Victoria. The Newborough Men’s Shed looks upon the operation as a social enterprise, a not for profit organisation working with a commercial company-- for the betterment of the community and the company.
