Our mission is to inspire readers by making a positive impact in their lives through telling the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex community’s stories and encouraging and enabling people to improve relationships and engage with each other, wherever they are in businesses, schools, with their families, or in their neighbourhoods. In 2000, after the Brother Sister LGBTIQA+ publication closed, QNews started printing as a tabloid newspaper and pursued a commercial direction. Two years later QNews moved to a magazine format. In 2015, the company ran into financial difficulties. It was facing closure, with the operators needing a crowdfunding campaign to keep the publication alive long enough to secure a new publisher. It faced further issues later that year after its then-owner, Ray Mackereth, filed for bankruptcy. Later that month, it was sold to Queensland businessman Richard Bakker. In October 2018, QNews appointed a transgender managing editor, Destiny Rogers, the first Australian publication to do so. Two decades later, QNews is distributed free to more than 900 locations. This includes cafes, nightlife venues, hotels, bookstores, arts venues, education centres, libraries, and more across Queensland, New South Wales and the Northern Territory. We also offer businesses the ability to reach our community via QDirectory, a second popular website for LGBTIQ people seeking LGBTIQ-welcoming businesses.
