My husband says I have an acquired wool disorder and he has indulged me in my 'stash' accumulation over the years but most importantly supported me in the purchase of the Tasmanian Woollen Co business. After much consideration we have rebadged the shop to Salamanca Wool Shop. The shop allows me to combine my love of wool and crafts that use wool with the desire to run my own business. To date it has been a great journey and a huge learning curve about the retail world. It is a continuing journey. The focus of the shop is threefold and when looking to purchase stock I look at wool content, quality of product, location of production. The focus over the next few years is to increase the stock and range of one off garments from local Tasmanian fibre artisans. At the shop you will be assisted by myself and the great staff that I have - Jan, Ann, Kate, Liz and Lily and my husband Kim. Just don't ask him about knitting a garment, wool or needle sizes. The Salamanca Wool Shop is located at 69 Salamanca Place in the Salamanca Arts Centre and is open seven days a week. The Salamanca Wool Shop is a member of the Salamanca Arts Centre .

The Spindle Tree opened in June 1989 as a craft cooperative for Tasmanian fibre artisanship specialising in knitting, crocheting, felting, dyeing, weaving, and spinning. Two strong principles of the cooperative are that all works are constructed from natural fibres and are made by Tasmanian artisans. Currently we have an active membership of 15 artisans . We also stock work from a number of Tasmanian suppliers ensuring that local artisans have an outlet for their work. You can find us at Shop 009 within the Salamanca Art Centre in Hobart, Tasmania. When looking for the shop at the Salamanca Art Centre look for the spinning wheel and colourful mohair hanks. Items in the store are highly individualistic with members often creating their own designs using hand spun and hand dyed fibres. Many of the members have been awarded prizes at local and interstate agricultural shows. Recently four members received a number of first placings at the Hobart Royal Show. New work is accepted and on display every Thursday. This ensures that the stock is ever evolving and reflective of the interest and exploration of the fibre artisan who has produced the garment/item. We will also create to commission. You can provide your own design/pattern and fibre/yarn or discuss your requirements with us and we will supply the fibre.
