Why Do Generators Have 2 Power Ratings

29 September 2013

One the most confusing facts buyers encounter, is understanding how portable generators are rated and what does this mean?

Most generators specifications describe two ratings - peak or (maximum watts) and continuous power (rated watts),

Peak or maximum watts are the maximum load the generator can run over a short period of time, normally only several minutes.  Some electrical appliances when first turned on require Start up power for a few seconds, hence the need for a generator to run at peak or maximum watts during the start-up period.

Continuous power or rated watts is the safe operating watts the generator needs to run at, to ensure the generator is protected from overheating and damage occurring.
