The Fire Service Museum in East Melbourne is a hidden gem for those interested in firefighting history. The volunteers provide excellent introductions to the detailed and fascinating displays. Visitors can learn about the history of firefighting in Melbourne and different countries, with some areas dedicated to children. The museum is not large but nicely set up, and the staff are helpful. One visitor was particularly moved when they were offered the opportunity to borrow memorabilia for a funeral, and appreciated the dedication of the staff. The old Eastern Hill Fire Station is like a time capsule, with well-preserved rooms and interactive displays. The museum is important to the fire community, and retired service men and women frequently visit to socialize and give tours.
