This year camp is celebrating its 20th anniversary! Privately owned and run by a local family, EMDC was a joint initiative of the Caloundra City Council and Federal Government and built with the vision of creating a place where local and Brisbane based school kids could enjoy a challenging, fun, nature-based and environmentally educational program. The camp is named in honour of the dam on which it borders. A lot of Sunshine Coast history runs in the name ‘Ewen Maddock’ belonging to an early settler and pioneer of the area. Along with his family, Ewen Maddock built a home they named ‘Koongamoon’ on the banks of the dam. The original homestead of pioneer and early settler Ewen Maddock. Today, the camp’s main office is a replica of the Maddock family homestead, built in the same rustic log cabin style to commemorate the site’s history. The dam itself was built in 1973 across the Addlington Creek, a tributary of the Mooloolah River to supply town water for the fast growing community of the region. The Ewen Maddock Dam has a surface area of 370 hectares, holds approximately 16, 500 megalitres and has an average depth of about four and a half metres. The Ewen Maddock Dam Camp is ideally located on the banks of the dam just minutes from the historic town of Landsborough at the foot of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Its proximity to major Sunshine Coast attractions including Australia Zoo, the Glasshouse Mountains, the Big Kart Track and Caloundra’s beautiful beaches makes it an ideal place for a group camp or weekend getaway. Comprising 50 hectares and surrounded by 200 hectares of state forest, the Ewen Maddock Dam Camp welcomes groups of all kinds along with those who want to use the facility for camping on weekends and school holidays.
