The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine is a statutory authority. It operates under the auspices of the Department of Justice, reporting to Parliament through the Attorney-General. We are also the Department of Forensic Medicine at Monash University. The VIFM came into existence to fix a problem: the poor facilities and arrangements that then existed for coronial autopsies in Victoria. The lack of investment and development in the facilities for death investigation both medically and legally in the post war (WWII) period in Victoria had resulted in serious deterioration of mortuary and court [...] Our greatest and most valued asset is our highly skilled and committed workforce.
