SUPERMARKET NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR CHECKING USE BY DATES!!! (according to supermarket manager) I have shopped here several times and have generally found the experience pleasant. The store is clean, well set out and staff are friendly and approachable. However today I purchased a product which expires the same day and when I went back to the store to try and exchange the product was told that as a consumer it is my responsibility, not the supermarkets, to check the dates of expiry. It was also suggested that I use this product past the date listed on the packet, which I find alarming as the item was dairy. The conversation then ended when the manager abruptly walked away. I have previously worked at a different IGA supermarket when I was younger, and I know our policy was to always check the use by dates on products and make the consumer aware of close to expiry products by reducing the price. I understand that taking the product back would have resulted in a loss of revenue to the supermarket, however as a customer I have lost money as I cannot use the product within the use by date. I feel that anyone choosing to shop in this store should be very careful when purchasing products, particularly any dairy or meat items. My suggestion would be to shop elsewhere unless you only need a few items and to closely examine what you do intend to purchase as this particular supermarket (according to it's manager) is not responsible for checking the use by dates on its products.
