The Big Strawberry, Koonoomoo, VIC

The Big Strawberry is owned and operated by Darren and Tarnia Hayes. It Is Situated at 7034 Goulburn Valley Highway Koonoomoo, which is about 8 km from Tocumwal and 9 Kilometres from Cobram. The business was first started in 1984 by Michael and Lorraine on 4 hectares, with only 1 acre being used for strawberries. The business now consists of 9 hectares with 2 acres being used for strawberries. Michael and Lorraine began growing Strawberries in 1969. The majority of fruit being grown is strawberries, We have two strawberry seasons and picking usually starts around mid to late September going through to the end of January. It then starts again late March and finishes late July but these two seasons can vary. Quality strawberries are picked at this time. Picking involves picking the ripe strawberries off the bush. Any strawberries that are not ripe are left on the bush and picked later after they ripen. Packing Strawberries involves taking the picked strawberries and packing them. This involves sorting through the strawberries, and putting them into either punnets (which are usually seen in shops), or plates (which contain larger strawberries and are usually bought by restaurants). The Big Strawberry uses the bruised or seconds to make Jam becuase the bruised fruit is usually overripe and adds the intense flavours to the jams. The Big Strawberry hand selects only the finest fruits to make Strawberry Wine, Strawberry Liquer, Strawberry Port and Strawberry Creme. The Big Strawberry has U-Pick or Pick your own Strawberries.
