Studio Tsukuru is a Melbourne supplier of genuine Japanese yakisugi, the charred timber cladding also known as shou sugi ban. Our boards are milled from Japanese sugi cedar and charred in Japan using traditional methods, then held at our Knoxfield warehouse and delivered Australia-wide.

The char is a surface layer. It is what gives the timber its depth of colour and its texture, from a deep crocodile-skin black through to a soft brushed grey-brown, and it is the reason no two boards look identical.

Three finishes are available. Hakuu is the deep char, left much as it comes from the burn. Benii is lightly brushed, so the grain reads through the black. Sumii is deeply brushed and can be finished to a custom colour.

We supply exterior facades, feature walls and ceilings on residential and commercial projects, and work with architects, builders, designers and homeowners. Samples, specification support and matching trims are available, and we can advise on fixing, batten spacing and board coverage at the design stage.

We also stock hinoki, Japanese cypress, for interior linings, sauna benches and screening.

Warehouse visits are by appointment, Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:00pm.
