Description

Aikido, the art of harmony, was developed between 1920 and 1960, by Morihei Ueshiba (1883 - 1969). He is known as O’Sensei, or ‘Great Teacher’. Aikido was O'sensei's life work; a journey that blended intense physical training, with deep philosophical and spiritual insights. The breadth of Aikido practice is vast. Most people identify Aikido by its civilised system of self defence - where defensive technique is used to restrain and subdue - preserving both the defender and attacker.

Company description

What is Aikido?

Aikido, the art of harmony, was developed between 1920 and 1960, by Morihei Ueshiba. He is known as O’Sensei, or ‘Great Teacher’. Aikido was O'sensei's life work, a journey that blended intense physical training, with deep philosophical and spiritual insights.

The basis of Aikido lies in the ability to harmonise in conflict. A simple example is that rather than trading strikes with our attacker, Aikido teaches us to use the force of the attack to apply technique and subdue. This is what makes Aikido perfect for both men and women, and for people with different levels of strength. It’s not about brute force; it’s about understanding force.

Yoshinkan Aikido is a dynamic form of Aikido. It teaches effective Aikido technique in a clear and systematic approach.

As Aikido focuses on using the attackers energy it is inherently suitable for all ages and levels of fitness. Aikido is ideal for both men and women, however, unlike other martial arts, women tend to excel, as the focus is not on muscular strength, but on form & timing. Aikido attracts a diverse range of nationalities, ideologies and perspectives on the world. What everyone has in common is their desire to understand and perfect the art.
