O restaurante A Travessa foi criada em 1978 por três amigos, na estreita Travessa das Inglesinhas na Madragoa, que serviam como se estivessem na sua própria casa. Fluentes em francês depressa se tornaram num restaurante habitual para os funcionários das Embaixadas Belga e Francesa. Com um ambiente boémio e elegante o restaurante era também frequentado por artistas, intelectuais, políticos e jornalistas e rapidamente se tornou uma referencia em Lisboa.Dos fundadores iniciais manteve-se a Viviane Durieu até que em 1994 juntou-se um novo sócio, António Moita, que acrescentou à cozinha os ingredientes e sabores da gastronomia portuguesa, até então principalmente Belga.20 anos depois da abertura e muito perto das antigas instalações, a Travessa mudou-se para o renovado e lindíssimo Convento das Bernardas. Com salas amplas e confortáveis, cuidadosamente restauradas e com esplanada no claustro, onde se pode usufruir do bom tempo durante quase todo o ano.Actualmente propriedade da Câmara Municipal foi totalmente recuperado em 2001 e nele está o restaurante a Travessa, o Museu da Marioneta e um núcleo de moradores no piso superior.
