Mark Watts has always had an interest in Architecture, sketching house plans and building models of houses in his early teens. After completing his higher school certificate in 1977, Mark took up a traineeship in Electrical Engineering with a mining company in 1978.

After completing his traineeship, Mark began working in the design office in 1982. In 1985 he was part of the team that introduced Computer Aided Drafting (CAD)to the design office. Mark left the mining company and began working as an electrician with his brother for about 2 years. He then took a job with another mining company as the design office supervisor. His ambition to work in the architecture field was still there, so in 1993, Mark left the mining company and started an architectural drafting business.

In 1994 Mark formed the company - Highlands Design Pty Ltd - and serviced the Southern Highlands of NSW with architectural drafting.
