Description
A self-help non-profit organization dealing with amputation and consequent health care issues. We provide peer support, medical aides and counseling to new and existing amputees and their families.
The Amputees and Families Support Group QLD Inc. is a non-profit organization founded unofficially in 1984 to deliver support to amputees, family and friends in many different ways through many different delivery methods. Officially the Amputees and Families Support Group QLD Inc. (AFSG) started in 1987 with a few amputees who felt alone and isolated when they first lost their limb(s). After placing an advertisement in the local newspaper, the first Amputee and Families Support Group meeting was held. The need for an organization creation came with the development of a more solid group. The vision shared by the group initially was to provide support to the amputees alone, however, with the maturing of this organization the founders group discovered that they could also help families, friends and supporters of amputees within the local community of Brisbane. Their vision was to provide singular support and encouragement to amputees and their families from pre-amputation through to rehabilitation and beyond. The need of the amputees for assistance with the acceptance and integrate this traumatic change into their everyday lifestyle (personal, professional and recreational) was determined. The Amputees and Families Support Group QLD Inc. is dedicated to providing relevant basic (and advanced) needs to amputees, their families, friends, carers and information to the wider community. This was put in place so they could work towards a realization of their full potential. The AFSG have had the support of many other local businesses in the past, however, today they lack the much needed financial and moral support from the local and peripheral communities. The organization is based in Logan City, Queensland, and is located at 9-11 Jacaranda Ave.
