Diabetes is a condition where there is too much glucose (sugar) in the blood. This may occur if the body is unable to produce enough insulin or the insulin is not working properly. Glucose is the main source of energy for our bodies and comes from carbohydrates. Some foods which contain carbohydrates include breads, cereals, potato, milk and fruit. Insulin is a hormone that is produced by the pancreas. This hormone is responsible for opening up the muscle, fat and liver cells in the body so they can store glucose and use it for energy. Without insulin, the cells in the body would not be able to use glucose for energy, which means the body would not have any energy.

Our Senior Podiatrist is trained in traditional (‘open’) foot and ankle surgery and utilizes these techniques in combination with minimally invasive surgical procedures. Minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery refers to treatment of bone and soft tissue injuries without the need for traditional open incisions. A major factor in recovery time and discomfort is the amount of tissue that has been involved by the incision. With minimally invasive foot surgery, a small incision is made in the patients' skin and a specially designed instrument is inserted into this opening. The entire procedure is performed through this tiny opening. At the conclusion of the surgery, a small bandage protects the area. The condition has been corrected, the patient remains ambulatory and discomfort and prolonged disability have been avoided.

Gait analysis is a non-invasive diagnostic method for in-depth examination and assessment of the way we walk or run. This complex analysis is best carried out by qualified podiatrists, who use their training in human biomechanics for making accurate assessments of your movement. You don't need a doctor's referral to see one of our podiatrists at the Active Foot Care Podiatry for gait analysis, simply contact us to arrange an appointment. Some typical biomechanical disorders we observe include: Excessive pronation Over supination Ankle instability Pelvic tilt Poor shock absorption Leg length discrepancies Unusual walking / running patterns

Orthopedics are podiatrist medical devices placed into your footwear designed specifically to improve foot function and lower leg mechanics. They work by restoring and supporting the foot's normal arch and alignment. Orthotic therapy is one of our services we offer for people who may display biomechanical faults in their walking or running. These include: Excess pronation Over supination Ankle instability Pelvic tilt Leg length discrepancies Unusual walking/running patterns
