The Lions Club of Brighton is an incorporated entity from the northern suburbs of Hobart, Tasmania (Lions District 201T1) which was founded in November 2011 with a group of 22 members. We received our charter from Lions Clubs International, sponsored by the Lions Club of Glenorchy City, in March 2012. Our primary goal is to support the needy, infirm and disabled in our municipality and beyond and we have progressed with this ideal since our formation. One of our greatest achievements to date has been the purchase of a specially built bicycle for a child in our municipality who was born with Down Syndrome and other conditions which prevented her from riding a bike with her brothers, as all children should be able to do. Veronika received her bike through the Freedom Wheels program, fully funded by the Lions Club of Brighton. We made a donation of a considerable size to the 2013 Tasmanian Bushfire Appeal as well as assisting with the catering for BlazeAid volunteers on a weekly basis during the clean up process. We have plans to get involved with the community of Brighton and surrounds in the next few years with many projects in the early planning stages as well as providing funds for various other community projects. We have been assisting with the Brighton Market since our inception, providing manpower to set up and pack up the stalls. We have also assisted the Hobart Sporting Car Club with the sale of tickets and gate-keeping for their events at Baskerville Raceway. We have assisted with the Lions Recycle for Sight Program by collecting and donating used eye glasses to some of the 153 million people worldwide that have uncorrected refractive errors. The ability to see can change a person’s life forever.
