The Journey from Disaster to opportunity

20 April 2016

When Cyclone Yasi hit North Queensland in February 2011, it brought more than high winds, rain and destruction. Yasi brought with it opportunity and community closeness and from these Allshade Canvas and Vinyl was born.

Yasi did considerable damage and there was a shortage of trades available to supply the needs of those affected. David, the now proprieter of Allshade Canvas and Vinyl, had been considering going into business for himself for quite some time and when he saw the need arise he took the plunge. Starting his canvas and vinyl business supplying shade sails, caravan annexes/awnings and associated products to the public, beginning with those whose property had been damaged during the cyclone.

The business began as a small outlet utilising a friends workshop space after hours and has grown from there with the opening of the workshop at 10B Carroll Street, Mount Louisa in May 2012.

Liasing with the various Caravan Parks throughout the Townsville area as well as the different caravan companies, the business has found it's niche supplying the needs of both the permanant caravan community and the 'Grey Nomad' community whose travels bring them to Townsville on a seasonal basis.

Customer service being the most important aspect of the company along with the provision of well designed and well made products has ensured both return customers and excellent word of mouth advertising throughout the caravan community. Travellers will often call saying "they (sic) have heard David is the man to see", with regards to their specific needs.

Shade sails and other products are also still very much a part of Allshade Canvas and Vinyl and the business method adopted by David and Jacqui of 'talking to the customer and listening to their needs' has ensured continued business in this arena also.

All in all Cyclone Yasi wasn't only a disaster, for many it was an opportunity, turning a bad situation to a good one with community service a priority.
